Chrissie Wellington OBE is a retired, British professional triathlete and four-time World Ironman Champion. She entered 13 Ironman events (2.4M swim, 112M Bike Ride, 26M Run) over an approximately 10 year period and was never beaten.
This is what she said on a recent(ish) podcast interview....
"Every race I did I wanted to give up"
Brilliant, and surely something that we all empathise with.
So.....when in the business of making change what do you do when you really don't want to be there?
Be Prepared:
👉 Expect It - Something else that Chrissie Wellington said was "expect it to be uncomfortable". Just knowing that it is likely means less of an emotional shock when it happens. You might even see it as a sign of progress.
👉 Know when it will happen - It is almost always at the same point, the messy middle, when the exciting start is behind you and completion is a long way off.
👉 Grit - The ability to persevere matters in being successful. The lows are not for ever and the highs will not last.
What to Do:
➡️ Process - Focus on the process, make small manageable steps everyday that make progress and the future will become clearer.
➡️ Perfection - Keep the desired outcome in mind all the time and do not try to make each step in that direction perfect. Sometimes good enough is good enough.
➡️ Triage - Avoid the overwhelm of being in the messy middle and concentrate activity on the smaller number of items that make the biggest difference.
So what do you do when in the "messy middle" to stay the course?
